Rake is the money taken from the pot that goes to the house. Typically in cash games, the rake is 5% of the pot up to $3. For tournaments, the rake is typically about 10% of the buyin amount. The rake goes towards promotions, rakeback and house overhead.
What is RAKEBACK?
Rakeback is the term used to describe giving a player a portion of the rake that they pay back. Typically the rake is paid by the poker room directly to the player’s poker account. Some poker rooms use VIP programs instead of rakeback. VIP programs are often almost identical to a rakeback program.

There are several formulas that are used by online poker rooms to decide how much rake to credit a player. The methods are dealt, weighted contributed, average contributed and Ongame Essence.
Dealt rakeback is the formula used by Cake Poker. The rake credited to a player is based on the formula rake/# of players dealt cards. Players are credited with rake regardless of whether they contribute to the pot or not.
Weighted contributed is the rake formula used by most online poker rooms. The amount of money a player contributes to the pot is in direct relation to the amount of rake a player gets credited with. For example, in a 6 handed game, let’s assume two players folded preflop and two players contributed $10 and two players contributed $20. If the rake was $3 the two players that folded preflop would not get credited any rake, the players that contributed $10 would each get $.50 credited and the two players that contributed $20 would get $1 contributed to their rake.
Average contributed is similar to weighted contributed. The difference is that all a player has to do is put money in the pot to get credited with rake. In the above example, the two players that folded preflop would still get credited with zero rake, but the other four players would each get $.75.
Ongame Essence is the rake formula used by the Ongame Network. Points and rake are distributed among the players that contributed to the pot. The better a player is, the less rake and points they are awarded. This was done in an attempt to help boost the bankroll of weaker players.
Yes, all poker rooms offered by VIP Rakeback pay rakeback on tournaments. All bonus rooms also pay VIP and bonus on tournament fees.
